At Power of Our Voices (POV), we stand in full support of Sarah Boyles' investigation into the human rights violations at Kentucky State Penitentiary (KSP). The sewage-contaminated food, black mold, freezing conditions, and denial of communication are not isolated incidents.
This is a nationwide crisis—one that is fueled by corruption, staff misconduct, and a complete lack of accountability.
The Pattern: Corruption, Cover-Ups & Retaliation
The horrific human rights abuses at KSP mirror what we’ve seen at La Palma Correctional Center in Arizona, where corruption and misconduct among staff are rampant.
At La Palma Correctional, recent investigations have uncovered:
Staff members smuggling massive amounts of drugs into the facility – fueling overdoses, addiction, and violence among inmates.
Staff taking unauthorized photos of inmates in the showers – an egregious violation of privacy, dignity, and safety.
Zero action taken against corrupt employees – those caught continue working, without consequences.
Why? Because the system protects itself. Just like at KSP, where whistleblowers (both inmates and staff) are punished or silenced, La Palma sweeps its corruption under the rug—while inmates suffer the consequences.
How Public Corruption Investigations Fail – And Who Pays the Price
The Texas Observer recently exposed how prison corruption investigations often fail—not because of a lack of evidence, but because of a deliberate effort to suppress the truth. (Read More Here)
This applies directly to KSP and La Palma.
When inmates speak out about abuse, they are thrown into lockdown and stripped of communication rights.
When correctional officers expose corruption, they are threatened, fired, or forced to resign.
When families demand answers, they are met with silence.
This is not a staffing issue. This is not about safety. This is a deliberate effort to suppress the truth and protect a broken system.
What Needs to Happen NOW
1. Federal Investigations into KSP & La Palma Correctional Center
The corruption at La Palma and KSP must be investigated by federal authorities, not just state-level agencies that have a vested interest in covering up misconduct.
File complaints with the DOJ:
Department of Justice Civil Rights Division
Contact your State Representative & Demand Action
2. Immediate Protection for Inmates Who Have Spoken Out
Every inmate retaliated against for speaking up must have their communication rights immediately reinstated.
Prison staff involved in smuggling drugs or violating inmate privacy must be removed from their positions and prosecuted.
3. Accountability for Prison Administrators Covering Up Corruption
The warden of La Palma Correctional Center must answer for rampant staff corruption and drug smuggling.
The warden of KSP must answer for silencing inmates and exposing them to inhumane conditions.
The Department of Corrections must stop protecting those who break the law.
